Excerpts from the interview
How does it feel to be a part of MTV Undivided, where singers from India and Pakistan will perform together?
It feels really great because when singers come together on one stage from both the countries they bring audiences from both the countries in one hall or under one roof. In that auditorium no one is an Indian or a Pakistani. They are just fans, music lovers and people who are there to enjoy one unified activity and all differences cease to exist between people and transcends them above politics.
What do you look forward to most for your performance in Dubai?
Like I said, a unified audience from both countries. When I am performing in India I am only performing for Indians, when I am performing in Pakistan it's only for a Pakistani audience, but in Dubai one sees the power of pure music when you see people from both the countries enjoying together. It feels great to see fans from both the countries unified.
How has the journey been from singing Sufi songs in Pakistan to Bollywood hits in India?
It feels great and it has been a blessed journey. It has been productive and full of learnings. I started from a pop rock band and produced songs like Aankhon Ke Saagar, Khamaj and Malhar and got recognised across the world for it. It was a great experience seeing myself on screen and then becoming a playback singer. Being part of a band was one experience and had its learnings and being a playback singer is an entirely different experience and both have enriched me in different ways. I really feel blessed.
A song of yours which is really close to your heart?
All my songs are really close to my heart. It depends on my mood. If I am ever in need of some inspiration in life Ye Hausla definitely is the one which I prefer.
Is there a singer you have not worked with but wish to collaborate with in the future?
I haven't worked with a lot of singers. I am actually open to working with anyone who shares the vision for a meaningful collaboration and mutual learning.
